During the fall and summer of 1967 investigations were carried out in order to study the influence of photoperiod upon certain growth and reproductive characteristics of the soybean varieties Hill and Hampton and the relationship between characters in the F2 generation of the crosses Hill x Hampton and Semmes x Hardee. The four varieties have a determinate growth habit. Hill is a variety of medium height classed in the early maturity group V and flowers late for its maturity. Hampton is classed in maturity group VIII and flowers early for its maturity. Semmes is a medium maturing variety (group VII), and Hardee is a late maturing variety (group VIII) and the difference in maturity between these two varieties is due to difference in flowering time, since theyhave their fruiting periods practically the same length. The characters under study were: flowering time, height at flowering time, fruiting period, maturity date, height at maturity, node of the first bloom, and height of the first pod (this last character was considered only for the cross Semmes x Hardee). Correlation coefficients for all possible pairs of characters were calculated using data from F2 generation. Parents, F1 and F2 of the Hill x Hampton cross, were grown under Stoneville (33o 25' L) photoperiod conditions and under simulated 20o L photoperiod conditions. The cross Semmes x Hardee (parents and F2) was grown only under Stoneville conditions. The 20o L photoperiod conditions caused a reduction of 30 percent in the total life cycle of both ...
