An increased supply of wood will be necessary to fulfill the rising demand of the world`s developing population. To meet this demand, forest research must create means of producing more wood, in less time, from a decreasing land base. Toward this goal, the trend for increasing utilization of hardwood species has been evident worldwide, not only by their large potential for high productivity, but also due to recent development of technologies leading to expanded wood-utilization oportunities. Thus, during the tast decade, in addition to a traditional role in the lumber industry, hardwoods have become important sources of alternative energy, pulp for paper, charcoal, and pole stock, among other uses. Another factor contributing to the increased use of hardwood ...has been the introduction of especies for afforestation in areas not included within the species` natural range. The introduction of exotic species is not without precedent for it has been accomplished with high degrees of success. However, widespread use of exotic species must often be precede by rather intensive investigations concerning compatibility with planting locations. If the prospective region of introduction possesses a climate similar to the fringes of the exotic`s natural range, one must carefully identify genotypes which will resist the climatic extremes before suitable ecological of economic performance will occur.
