Pineapple peel was used as substrats for the production of lower volatile fatty acid and biogas. The experiments were conducted using gallon bottle digesters and rumen extract as inoculum. The independent variables used were drying of substrate, nutrient addition, pH and substrate loading . Single dose of substrate and incremental addition of substrate were tried. The dependent variables measured were VFA concentration, biogas production and total solids. Fermentation efficiency, solid balance and carbon balance were calculated from raw data. In the experiment without pH control, the highest product formation (weight of VFA formed/unit weight of dry peel fed) was 0.479% obtained from using fresh pineapple peel where the carbon nitrogen ratio was adjusted from 78 to 40 by addition of ammonium sulfate. The optimum peel loading was 1 gm dry peel/liter of fermenter volume/day (10 gms DM load). Biogas production for the above treatments was 46 ml/gm dry peel/day, but the main components were carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. |
