An estimation of belowground growth and turnover in a Trachypogon savanna grass was compared with those of two other plots at different times during the dry season. In these estimations we took into account the disappearance rate of dead matter and the data on funcxtional and non-functional dru matter. Thus, changes were recorded in the dry weight of excised roots during their decomposition in the soil and the ratio of functional to non-functional roots was assessed with the 2, 3, 5-Triphenyltetrazolium chloride reduction techniques. Results indicate that fire produce a significant decrease of 8 and 28% in the belowground growth of savannas burnt at the beginning (194.8 vs. 179.0 g m-2yr-1) and end (194.8 vs. 141.2 g m-2yr-1) of the dry season. The mean turnover values suggest that the root system of a savanna grass may survive on the average for one year. Therefore there is a relative equilibrium in the bellowground system, where annual growth is equal to the amount of annual decomposed dead matter in the soil. |
