In this paper we describle the results of a sensitivity analysis of the SOYGRO V5.41 soybean crop growth model to evaluate the effects of photoperiod and temperature on seasonal growth and seed yield. Temperature was varied from 12 to 38 C and all other environmental parameters were fixed at constant values. Simulated response of seed yield to temperature was curvilinear with a maximum at 24 C. Yield, seed size, and harvest index were reduced as temperature was increased from 24 to 38 C. Yield response to photoperiod was cultivar-dependent. Maximum seed yield was simulated at photoperiods which were sufficiently long to moderately lengthen the life cycle to increase LAI and increase the seed filing period. As photoperiod increased further, yield decreased asthe model simulated slower pod formation, greater pod abortion, slower seed growth rate, and continued vegetative growth. Sensitivity to temperature and photoperiod in actual weather data sets was tested by moving simulated cultivars north or south in latitude to new weather sites between 8 to 46 N latitude. Simulations show how cultivars are adapted to particular latitude ranges in terms of producing high seed yield. |
