1) Field emergence and seedling survival of identical seed lots differ markedly due to differences in seedbed stress. Laboratory vigor tests should thus be based on ranking seed lots in terms of their ability to perform under stress. 2) Stress seedbeds were found to be associated with cool temperatures, soil crusting, lack of moisture, and herbicide treatment. 3) Seed lots may have an acceptable warm germination test, but a low vigor test. When low vigor seed results in reduced yield, it is generally associated with reduced and/or uneven stands. 5) Of the tests researched herein, the cold test was the most consistent test for ranking the field performance of seed lots under stress seedbed conditions. 6) One or more of the vigor tests should be of use to seedsmen and farmers in identifying potential problem seed lots. |
