Commercial soybean production on the Texas Coastal Prairie has a short but dynamic history. In slightly more than one decade, the acreage has expanded from less than 5,000 acres to over 400,000 - an area almost equal to that planted to rice. This success has resulted largely from the availability of ongoing research in the Coastal Praire by the Station Agricultural Experimet Station at Beaumento and the effective dissemination and application of these findings by the State Agricultural Extension Service through result demonstrations. The rapid acceptance and use of the results by progressive producers determined the success of the crop. Several elements have contributed to the phenomenal growth of soybeans in the Texas Coastal Prairie region. Further implementation and improvement in these facthers will influence the continued expansion and profits received. Some of these factors are the following: 1) available acreages with no government restrictions, and on attractive price structure providing a profitable competitive advantage for soybeans over many crops other than rice. 2) a joint and concerted effort by a small team of research and extension personnel to provide critical soybean management information to Texas Coastal Prairie producers. 3) the advantageous way that soybeans fit into rotations with rice, a special need during depressed markets for rice. 4) the use of rice production practices that promote proper drainage - the most importante single requirement for successful soybean production.
