In Japanese orange culture weeds usually cause serious problems, but are expected to function as ground cover to prevent soil erosion. To cope with such inconsistency, timely quantitative regulation of weeds is most acceptable, and it could succeed by the proper use of herbicides so far as the weed vegetation is good in quality. However, orange orchards actually are often infested by the perennial species such as Artemisia princeps Pamp., Cyperus rotundus L., Imperata cylindrica P. beauv., Equisetum arvense L. and Calystegia spp, all which are quite troublesome and resistant to the present control measures. Therefore, the improvement of the weed vegetation, including the eradication of these species should be practiced along the longterm program. The program will be made up depending on the following investigations: 1) valuation of each species to classify what should be eradicated, controlled or considered negligible, 2) trials on the eradication of troublesome, perennial species, 3) fundamental investigation on the relationship between management measures and population shifts. |
