Composite root mass is defined as the total amount of roots, without distinction of dead and alive roots and the plant species involved. The composite root mass of the Amazon caatinga vegetation near San Carlos de Rio Negro was studied in soil pits dug in the center of 13 plots, each representing a particular site type and its vegetation and in 12 additional pits dug along a 100 m trasect. Aboveground biomass in the plots was also harvested and weighed. The average of 132 t ha-1 dry matter of composite root mass is the highest root amount ever reported for terrestrial tropical vegetation. 86% of this amount occured in the Ao+A1, and 70% is in the size class below 6 mm. Root development in the Amazon caatinga is thus superficial. The amount of composite root mass varies between 40 and 333 t ha1 dry matter. The amount of composite root mass relative to total plant biomass is around 20% in the Ya-site where the soil is permanently waterlogged due to the low position in the terrain. In the Ba-site at the highest position in the area, this percentage is 62%. In the intermediate Cu-site, the corresponding value varies between 20 and 50%. The great amount of composite root mass, its concentration at the topsoil and its high to extraordinaly high proportion of the total plant matter in the Amazon caatinga is interpreted in terms of the general oligotrophy of the system. The corresponding nutritional problems of the vegetation are however lessened by the constant flow of soil water through the system. The extremely high relative amount of composite root mass in the Ba-site in particular is thought to reflect an additional stress imposed on the enviroment by periodical oversaturation of the soil by water, alternating with periods of drought.
