In Jareros at Ursulo Galvan, Veracruz Mexico, it was established a parcel (20 x 30 m) of sugar
cane fwith a different treatment from usual. The parcel was not burnt and the crop residues were
chopped manually. In this site a litter bag experiment was settled with two treatments, treatment
1: leaves and stems were longer than20cm, and in treatment II: they were smaller than 20 cm. It
was set 180 experimental units (litter bags) that were collected and weighed periodically for
338 days. The parameters measured in the vegetal material from the litter bags as well as in the
soil next to it, were the contents of C, N, P, Ca, Mg, K. macrofauna inventories from the soil were
done at the beginning and at the end of the experiment.
This experiment showed that the stems and leaves of sugar cane lost 60 % of their weight in
204 days and most of the nutrients were incorporated to the soil during this time; treatment II
(leaves and stems divided in small size) showed the propensity to decompose faster, although
between both treatments there were no significant differences.
Referring to the soil macrofauna, there were no changes observed from the beginning and the
end of the experiment which shows that a year without burning does not allow soil fauna restitution.
The comparison between a parcel being burnt and without being burnt showed that the sugar
cane growth, grew more in the parcel without burning. This is an indicator that avoiding burn, the
sugar cane production is improved and recolonization of soil fauna is promoted but this will be
