Soybean germplasm was screened for resistance to Mexican bean beetle (Epilachna varivestis Mulsant) (MBB) in North Carolina in 1967 and in South Carolina in 1968. PI 171451, PI 227687 and PI 229358 were highly resistant to MBB feeding, having less than 20% defoliation, whereas commercial cultivars had 80-90% defoliation. Later studies demonstrated that these lines were resistant to bean leaf beetle [Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster)], corn earworm [Heliothis zea (Boddie)], soybean looper [Pseudoplusia includens (Walker)] (SL) and velvetbean caterpillar [Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner)] (VBC). This broad range resistance is important because these insects vary among production areas and years. A breeding program to develop insect resistant cultivars was begun in 1969 using PI 229358. Segregates from the cross 'Bragg' x PI 229350 were evaluated for MBB in South Carolina and for SL in Mississippi. Results indicated the necessity to screen with more than a single insect to obtain multiple insect resistance. Genetic studies have indicated that resistance is governed by relatively few recessive genes. Breeding work utilizing PI 171451, PI 227687 and PI 229358 is underway in several research programs. At most locations breeders depend upon natural insect infestation. At Stoneville, field cages approximately 20 x 30 m are used, and laboratory reared moths are released. A germplasm line D75-10169 has been released for research purposes. This line equals Pi 229358 in resistance and has improved agronomic qualities. Another ...
