Most agricultural seeds and the seedlings which subsequently develop from them are vunerable to attack by fungal pathogens and insects and require some form of chemical treatment to protect them and allow full development and yield. Fungal spores may be on the seed coat before sowing or present in the soil. Insect attack takes place after sowing and during the vunerable early seeding stage. All these risks may be insured against by the application of suitable chemical seed treatments. Also, seed treatment to control foliar disease occuring long after sowing has in recent years become a reality and has opened up prospects for new uses for seed treatments in the future. |
