Aphids serve as food for a great variety of insects and are subjcet to infection by fungi. In spite of the premature mortality caused by biological agents, by the aphids own activities, and by averse physical conditions aphids not only persist but often attain population densities that cause losses to crops. Insecticides have helped to reduce crop losses, but the chemicals are only temporarily effective and the use of nonselective insecticides may actually aggravate aphid problems [De Fluiter (76); Hukusima (167); Mardzhanjan and Ust'yan (215); Stern et al. (345)]. In order to take full advantage of the environmental pressures that are constantly being exerted against aphids, we must learn more about them and especially about their natural enemies. |
