The term savanna is a widely used but nevertheles unsatisfactory one, of South American origin, the term appears to have first been recorded in print by G. F. de Oviedo, who wrote, "This name 'savanna' is applied to land which is without trees, but with much grass either tall or short" (Beard 1, Hills 2). Subsequent to this rather general definition the term has been applied to almost any formation in any part of the world that has some grasses in the herb layer. Not surprisingly, therefore, many individual and corporate efforts have been made to produce more meaningful definitions, classifications, and cartographics of different savanna areas, on both regional (3-5) and intercontinental (6-8) levels. It should be noted, however, that some workers, especially in east Africa (9), have rejected the use of the term as being a South American one seldon correctly applied outside of its continent of origin |
