Decomposition pattern of paddy straw, dhaincha (Sesbania aculeate) and their mixture (1 : 1) was studied in 'Vitro' under low temeperature condition of winter season in normal and saline-sodic soils. A spurt in CO2 evolution was observed at 3rd of incubation with all plant materials in both soil ecological conditions. Decomposition of plant materials in terms of CO2 evolution and nutrient release was higher in normal soil as compared to saline-sodic soil. Persistence of nitrite nitrogen was observed in saline-sodic soil. Apparent per cent los- ses of added plant materials viz. dhaincha + paddy straw; dhaincha and paddy straw were 38.9, 33.3 & 20.9 in normal soil and 28.1, 27.2 and 12.8 in saline-sodic soil, respectively. Maximum CO2 evolution in 90 days of incubation was noticed in case of the mixture of dhaincha and paddy straw (1 : 1). Paddy straw decomposed at the slowet rate. Dhaincha alone and its mixture with paddy straw showed release of available nitrogen while paddy straw showed locking of nitrogen. All the plant material showed immobilization of phospho- rus initially. In general, a slight decrease in pH was noticed ata later stages of decomposi- tion. Soil organic matter built up in soil due to addition of the plant materials in winter sea- son, was in general, of active nature showing wide C/N ratio ion soils. |
