A methor was developed by wich availability indices for any or all of the important soil cations can be estimated from a single equilibration with a 0.001M SrCl2 solution. Parameters derived from this system include intensity factors (activities and activity ratios) and capacity factors (exchangeable levels and buffering capacities) for each of the cations analyzed in the equilibrium solution. The method was used to determine the status of K, Mg, and Ca of some representative agricultural soils of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The only condition required is that the selectivity coefficients between Sr and K, Mg and Ca are known in advance. The selectivity coefficients for seventy soil samples (obtained by applying ten treatments to seven soils), expressed as average and standard deviation, were KSRCa = 0.98 +- .09, Kca+Sr Mg = 0.68 +- .16 and KDK = 0.17 +- .06. The use of an average to represent all soils my be satisfactory, however, corrected selectivity coefficients can be obtained as a function of the soil organic matter content and the pH of the equilibrium solution. |
