Many laboratories throughout the world are involved in the search for strains of rhizobia that can be used in inoculants. In the past, the ability to form an effective symbiosis with the particular hosts was the only criterion used - laboratory tests to make an initial selection from a large number of strains, followed by field tests on a limited number of strains. As we come to know more about the factors affecting the simbiosis the plants and rhizobia, and of the ecology of rhizobia,we are able to apply a wider range of tests for the selection of strains. Regardless of the laboratory tests, it is essential that the finaltest be done in the field.
