Levels of soluble acid phosphatase activity of roots of 10 week-old ononions were not significantly altered by an improvement in the phosphorus status of the plant, either by vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza or by the addition of soluble phosphorus to the soil. Root alkaline phosphatase activity was significantly decreased only in those plants supplied with available phosphorus during growth. Qualitative analyses of the soluble phosphatases, after separation by gel electrophoresis, revealed differences in the enzymes involved in the phosphorus metabolism of onion roots supplied with available phosphorus and those provided with phosphorus by the mycorrhiza: a new enzyme band with an activity at pH 4.0 and 8.5 was specific to the mycorrhizal infection. |
