The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality effect of native pasture on supplement intake by cows in cow/calf herds. Two hundred and forty Nelore cows (age 7 to 9 years) and their calves were assigned to four treatments: A - Control - only mineral mixture; B - dry supplement; C - liquid supplement; D - liquid supplement for cows and creep-feeding for calves. These supplements were offered in open feeders during the rainy season (September to December/2001) and during the dry season (May to september/2002). Cows were rotated among pastures. Supplement intake was measured daily for treatment B and at each three days for treatments C and D. Pastures samples were analyzed for the content of crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and lignin (LIG). Significant differences were not found for quality parameters and intake of supplement between seasons. The cows selected feeding sites with high quality forages, with means og 9.9%, 38.1%, 70.7% and 4.9% for CP, ADF, NDF and LIG, respectively. The mean intakes (41.1, 329.3, 233.7 and 227.7 g/animal/day for treatments A, B, C and D, respectively) was below expected. It was found a significant correlation (P<0,10) of supplement intake with LIG (r2=0,78), PB (r2=-0.71) and ADF (r2=-0.69) for the treatments A, B and C, respectively. |

The River Basin Quality Index (RBQI) is the proposed improvement index that considers simultaneously several indexes related on land uses and occupation, level of deforestation, potential of erosion, sedimentation, contamination by heavy metals, pesticides, domestic, industrial and agro-industrial effluents, bioindicators, hydrological alteration, trophic state etc. By means of Fuzzy Logic analysis all the indexes were equally computed, producing a more completed single index for the Miranda River Basin, a low-medium impact environment that contributes to Pantanal wetland. |
