This work deals with biological control of the sugarcane borer, Diatraea spp. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The methods employed in obtaining and utilizing its natural enemies as well as the present status of this control in Brazil are discussed. The methods described are based mainly on the system developed by the Department of Entomology of the Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz, University of Sao Paulo, in Piracicaba, State of Sao Paulo. The parasites Lixophaga diatraeae Town. and Paratheresia claripalpis Wulp (Diptera: Tachinidae) can be reared on larvae of Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Galleriidae) and these two parasites as well as Metagonistylum minense Town. (Diptera: Tachinidae) can be reared on Diataea larvae, their usual host. The results show that the most efficient parasites are distributed as follows: Lixophaga diatraeae in the Federal Territory of Amapa, and Apanteles flavipes C. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), in northeast; Metagonistylum minense and Parathesia claripalpis, in northeast, south and southeast of Brazil. |
