A small batch seed dryer has been developed using an industrial type vacuum cleaner as a source of heat and air. Eighteen experimental drying tests were run to comprove the efficiency of uses of an industrial type vacuum cleaner to dry small amounts of seed. A design is given for constructing a seed container in such a dryer using a 55 gallon drum. Temperature rise and static pressure were major considerations during the drying process, even though air flow, relative humidity, moisture content and drying time were evaluated, also. The temperature rise was very uniform and ranged from 20 to 35oF. Essentially, the electrical input of the motor is converted to heat that raises the temperature of the air, except for a small amount of kinetic energy associated with the moving air and the heat loss in the hose from vacuum cleaner to the plenum chamber. The static pressure ranged from 0.10 to 0.35 inches of water column, indicating that the vacuum cleaner moved a reasonable volume of air through the seed mass. The fundamental factors necessary for drying seed are heat to evaporate the moisture and air to remove the moisture from the vicinity of the seeds (8,9,34,36,37). From this study it can be concluded that the industrial type vacuum cleaner perform efficiently to provide these fundamental factors - heat and air. |
