New demands imposed by consumer and mainly by socioeconomic changes am exerting new pressures on beef cattle production systems in Brazil. These forces result in new challenges which are related to improvement of the efficiency of production and reduction of age at first calving, as well as the slaughter age. Closely related to these parameters are: the need for increasing weight and rate of weight gain. This experiment was carried out using information from Nellore and croossbred animals from six genetic groups formed by mating Simental, Chianina and Charolais bulls with Nellore cows, and Nellore bulls with 1/2 Simental 1/2 Nellore, 1/2 Chianina 1/2 Nellore and 1/2 Charolais 1/2 Nellore cows. The traits analyzed were preweaning gain and days necessary to reach 165 kg of liveweight. With respect to sire breed it was observed that those breeds with heavier mature weight or higher weigltt gain produced calves that gained weight faster (P<.05). Thus, progenies from Charolais bulls had the higher preweanmg gains (680 g/day), followed by those sired by Simental and Chianina (650 and 640 g/day), which were not different from each other (P>.05), and finally, the calves sired by Nellore bulls (600g/day). As far as breed of dam is concerned, the higher the milk production potential and/or the higher the mature weight, the higher was the preweaning weight gain (P<.05). Calves from Simental-Nellore and Charolais-Nellore F1 cows were those that gained faster (670 and 680 g/day), while those ou of Nellore and 1/2 Chianina -1/2 Nellore cows were the lightest. With respect to age at 165 kg of liveweight it was observed that larger paternal breeds were those wich reached 165 kg most rapidly (P<.05). As far as maternal breed is concerned, progeny out of 1/2 Simental-1/2 Nellore were the youngest at 165 kg of liveweight, and those out of Nellore cows were the oldest (P<.05).
