An experimental solar-heated kiln (designed as a low-cost semi-greenhouse type with semi-automated control of the drying schedules) was compared with normal air drying. Data are given from 10 test runs with various species of lumber (Pinus radiata, Eucalyptus globulus, oak [Quercus sp.], beech [Fagus sylvatica], Platanus hybrida [P. acerifolia]), with regard to drying rate, initial and final wood m.c., reliability and efficiency. The results show that the solar kiln can dry economically from an initial m.c. of 70-80% to a final m.c. of 8-10% up to 3.5X faster than air drying. Final wood quality (as regards checks, splits and internal stresses) is generally better than that achieved by normal air drying and conventional kiln drying. |
