Abstract: Dissolved carbon (DC) and dissolved nitrogen (DN) plays an important role
in biological activity and transport of pollutants and nutrients in soils, but
little information is available with regard to the long-term impact of land
uses practices on the dynamics of DC and DN. The inter-annual variation of
DC and DN contents were investigated in sandy soils by a 1 year lysimeter
experiment in two small watersheds at northeastern Pará, Cumaru and São
João (SJ). The experiment was conducted from March 2014 to April 2015
with land use: Pasture, Secondary Forest, Burn, Agroforest System, riparian
vegetation and in milling areas. Burned and pasture areas resulted in a high
values of DC at soil solutions due exposition of soils with loss of nutrients
mainly in the SJ watershed. The Agroforest systems and secondary forests
also appear with relevant land use as a conservative nutrients in the soil as
riparian vegetation at both watersheds with low variation of these elements
from soil solutions DC (2,16-3,72 mg.ha -1 ) and DN (0,34-0,60 mg.ha -1 ). Tropical forests store and sequester high amounts of carbon and are the most diverse terrestrial ecosystem. A complete understanding of the relationship between biodiversity and carbon storage and sequestration across spatiotemporal scales relevant for climate change mitigation needs three approaches: empirical, remote sensing and ecosystem modelling. We review individual approaches and show that biodiversity has short-term and long-term benefits across spatial scales. We argue that enhanced understanding is obtained by combining approaches and, especially, integrating approaches through using 'boundary objects' that can be understood and measured by all approaches, such as diversity of leaf traits of the upper canopy. This will lead to better understanding of biodiversity effects on climate change mitigation, which is crucial for making sound policy decisions. |
