Crossability between Chinese Spring wheat and certain rye cultivars is determined primarily by the factors Krl on wheat chromosome 5B and Kr2 on wheat chromosome 5A. The same two chromosomes, plus to a lesser extent chromosome 5D, determine crossability of Chinese Spring with H. bulbosum. These determinations were made using the series of Chinese Spring/Hope substitution lines as maternal parents in the crosses. The Kr alleles function by inhibiting the entry of pollen tubes into the micropyle of maternal tissue.
The same CS/Hope substitution lines were used to pollinate Betzes barley in order to determine which chromosome of Chinese Spring carried factors for crossability in this combination. Hybrid embryos and seedlings were obtained with all substitution lines with the exception of 5A, 5B, 5D. In addition, no progeny were obtained with C.S. nulli 5A-tetra 5D nor C.S. nulli 5B tetra 5D. The results indicate firstly that factors on homoeologous group 5 of C.S. control crossability with Betzes barley; the factors on these chromosomes function from the paternal side as well as the maternal as shown for crossability with rye and H. bulbosum. Secondly, with regard to crossability with Betzes the crossability factors function in complementary fashion since no progeny were obtained from the nulli-tetra combinations. |
