In a random block design with 4 replicates, the spreading time of guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) seeds in respect to burning for schieving its establishment in a marginal area was studied. The time for seed spreading was: a) in february, two months prior to burning; b) in March, one month prior to burning; c) seed spreading in Abril immediately after burning and e) control (burning whihout seed spreading). 2. There was a larger population in the treatments when seeds were scattered two months before burning or immediately afterwards, although these did not differ significantly. However, the highest yield was achieved in the treatment where seeds were broadcasted two months before burning differing significantly (P<0,05) from the remaining treatments. One the other hand, the lowest yield was obtained when burning toock place immediately after seed spreading. Soil N, K and OM contents were not affected by fire, but P, Ca, Mg and pH contents were increased (P<0,05). 3. It is recommended that the seed spreading of guinea grass should take place two monts prior to burning in February for establishment this species in marginal areas. |
