A growth chamber experiment was conducted to study the response of five crop species to varying levels of iron in nutrient solution. The plant species tested were alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The iron levels applied were 20, 40, 80, 160, 320 and 640 µM. The crop species adapted showed various degrees of response to growth medium Fe levels. The Fe levels had no significant effects on shoot and root growth of alfalfa and common beans and root growth of red clover and rice. With a few exceptions, concentration and uptake increased with increasing Fe levels. With the exception of alfalfa, the rate of Fe uptake increased with increasing Fe levels, and in alfalfa the rate of Fe uptake increased up to the 160 µM Fe level then declined. In general, higher Fe concentrations in the growth medium decreased the uptake of most essential nutrients. |
