Macroptilium atropurpureum (DC.) Urb. (siratro) and Stylosanthes guianensis (M.B.K.) (stylo) and combinations of paired rhizobial strains, supplied in several proportions, were used to study inter-strain competition in associations with tropical legumes. Host plants were raized from surface-sterilised seed, grown on agar in cotton wool plugged tubes and populations and strain ratios determined in the inoculum supplied and on the root surface at several times after inoculation. The nodules were mapped in order of appearance and typed at harvest. The results showed that similar strains competed more with each other in the colonization of the root surface than did unrelated strains. The capacity to colonize the root and dominate the paired competitor was characteristic of the strain, was not affected by host and was unrelated to effectiveness of the strain-host combination. A significant regression was observed in most of the cases between proportion of nodules produced and root-surface representation, even though it was never a simple relationship. In two cases studied in siratro, the effective strain was more competitive in forming nodules than the ineffective one. However in one of these the ineffective strain was more at a disadvantage than in the other. There was also difference in nodulating competitiveness between two effective strains. In stylo, the ineffective strain overwhelmed the effective one in the production of nodules. In two other cases there was no difference in nodulating competitiveness between...
