In CENARGEN, great progress has been made in 1996. With the inauguration of the Biotechnology building last november, there was a large improvement in laboratory facilities. This building has an area of 3,000 square meters, and includes much new equipment. Good results have beenm achieved with the use and development of technologies which weren't available untin then. Concerning training and broadcasting, CENARGEN gave several courses on Genetic Resources, Biotechnology and Biological Control, as well as seminars, workshops, congress, conferences, expositions, and meetings in Brazil and abroad. In 1996, CENARGEN hosted several visitors, ranging in age from the young student, up to established authorities from Brazil and overseas. In order to integrate with other overseas institutions, CENARGEN greatly reinforced colaborations, and it has been taking part in many interchange programmes with the public and private sectors. CENARGEN interacted with the work of several international research institutes, by having 21 consultants who, with their experience, contributed to the improvement of its research in specific areas. Cenargen has been trying to obtain external funds in order to improve the facilities of the Center. Due to the dedication and great cooperation of its employees, large sums were obtained in 1996. Therefore, the present report shows the main achievements in research, services and administrative management in Cenargen in 1996.
