Avocado trees bought from a nursery should already have been hardened. Plant the trees an soon as possible after receiving then. Do not place the trees in the sun since the containers become hot and could burn the roots before planting. Never keep the trees too long before planting they are made ready for planting while still in the nursery. If they are Kept much longer they may become root-bound, develop long shoots in uncontrolled shade and suffer from nutrient deficiencies. The young trees should be supported with sturdy props as soon as possible after planting. Nursery props are not designed for field conditions. Trees that topple over and expose the underside of the leaves and tender stems to the sun will undoubtedly suffer sunburn. If the nurseryman has not white-washed the stems to below the leaf canopy, this should be done before planting to prevent sunburn (Fig. 1). Remove the nursery tags and surplus graft strips after planting to prevent girdling. |
