The so-called "quebra-galho" clone of Tahiti lime is very popular in Brazil, because the small size of the trees is suitable for high density plantings. These Tahiti lime trees are easily recognized because they present bark cracking symptoms, wich have been claimed to be associated with "exocortis" infection. Viroid infection of two "quebra-galho" Tahiti lime tress from a farm near Araraquara in the state of São de Paulo, Brazil, was assessed by graft-inoculation into Etrog citron, followed by sPAGE analysis and Northern-blot hybridization using viroid-specific probes. Both trees were found to be infected with Citrus exocortis viroid (CEVd) and Citrus viroid III (CVd-III). Similarly, five clones of Tahiti lime from different origins and available at Topara Nursey, near Chincha, Peru, were also tested for viroids. The four clones that displayed characteristic bark-cracking symptoms were found to be infected with CEVd, HSVd and CVd-III, whereas the clones that did not present bark-craking symptoms were either viroid-free or only infected with CVd-III. "Quebra-galho" symptoms differ from those of the wood-pocket disease of Tahiti lime bacause, apparently, they lack the symptoms of leaf blotch, wood-staining and fruit sectoring. Therefore both affections are most probably unrelated. Since the presence of viroids, and in particular CEVd, in "quebra-galho" limes might only be circumstantial, assays are being conducted to establish if viroids are indeed the cause of "quebra-galho" bark cracking symptoms.
