Despite the iniciatives being taken in North America and Zew Zealand, where national parks were being created in the 1870s, Europe was slow to follow. Perhaps the concept of vast `wilderness areas' set aside for all time for the enjoyment of the public and to protect the finest examples of the natural heritage did not seem realistic in smaller industrialized countries with high population densities. Nevertheless the imagination was stirred, and after the creation of the first five in the arctic north of Sweden in 1909, the idea slowly caught on. The famous Swiss National Park dates from 1914 and two were established in Spain in 1918, but the majority of parks were not designated as such until the years after the Second World War.
