Abstract: Four lambs, 8 rams and 8 ewes in mid pregnancy were each inoculated orally with 10,000 infective oocysts of the GT-1 strain of T. gondii. The lambs were killed 4, 7, 14 and 21 days postinoculation (DPI) and their small intestines, mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, lungs, muscle and brain were titrated in mice to determine the extent of multiplication of T. gondii. In mesenteric lymph nodes and small intestines 10,000-fold more T. gondii multiplied than in other tissues. Mesenteric lymphadenitis and enteritis were the main lesions and T. gondii was demonstrated in lesions. To determine the presence of encysted T. gondii, the rams were killed 97, 132, 146, 153, 160, 160, 173 and 173 DPI and their liver, kidneys, brain, heart, diaphragm, testes, and thigh muscles were digested in acid pepsin and inoculated into mice. T. gondii cysts were demonstrated in the heart of 7 rams, in liver, thigh muscles, and diaphragm of 6, in kidneys of 5, in brain of 4 and testes of 1 ram. The 8th ram escaped infection. The ewes were killed 7, 8, 11, 15, 18, 21 45 and 49 DPI and their placentas were titrated in mice and fetal tissues were inoculated in mice. Three of the 8 ewes aborted or had dead lambs, 7, 8 and 46 DPI. T. gondii was isolated from the placenta, 15 DPI and not at 7,8 and 11 DPI, and from the fetal tissues at 18 DPI. Lesions due to toxoplasmosis were not found in placenta, or fetuses examined between 7 and 21 DPI. Necrosis was found in fetal cotyledons 45 and 46 DPI. Lesions or Toxoplasma were not observed in tissues of any of the rams or ewes.
