Simultaneous hermaphrodites have both functional female and male reproductive organs and a
limited amount of reproductive resources for both sexual functions and therefore are selected to
optimize their investment in the two sexual functions. Sex allocation theory provides evolutionary
arguments for explaining patterns of relative investment in male versus female function in
hermaphrodites. Models for simultaneous hermaphrodites typically predict the constant optimal
sex allocation (relative investment in male vs. female function) independent of individual or
environmental conditions. Sex allocation theory predicts that, in promiscuous mating conditions,
simultaneous hermaphrodites should adjust their reproductive investment, invest more resources
into the male than into the female function. In contrast, in monogamy, hermaphrodites should
invest more resources in the female function at the expenses of the male function. Such flexibility
also provides the possibility to influence sex allocation in the mating partner. To investigate this
idea, we measured egg production (female investment) and sperm production as well as
spermathecae size (both are part of male investment) under different mating regimes in the
redworm Eisenia andrei. |
