Three systems of grazing (rotational with four, and ten paddocks and eletric fence) and two stocking rates (3.5 and 5.0 bulls/ha) were compared using 162 half-bred bulls grazing
pangola grass pasture without irrigation and fertilized with 300, 100 and 85 kg/ha of N, P
and K respectively. Grazing systems did not affect performance. There was a depression
in daily gain per animal and a increase in beed production per hectare as stocking rate in-
creased from 3.5 to 5.0 bulls/ha. There was a. marked seasonal growth related to rainfall
and DV availability during the rainy season. It is proposed that the use of more than four paddcks is of little value in terms of performance while this would led to a reduced cost
of grazing units. The use of high or low stocking rates depends on whether maximum indi-
vidual performace or maximum beef production per hectare are to be acheved. |
