Polymorphism in the euglenoid flagellate Trachelomonas armata (EHRENBERG) STEIN (Euglenaceae Euglenophyceae), is here studied, based on a population sample collected from one single station in a pond situated in the Pocone Pantanal, Mato Grosso State, western Brazil. Examination of 331 individuals taken at random allowed the authors to form the following conclusions: (1) the shape of the lorica varies from perfectly ellipsoid to subtrapezoidal, oblong or obovoid; (2) the pattern of wal ornamentation varies from completely to forms with spines at only one pole to forms with the spines more or less evently covering the whole lorica wall surface; and (3) the variation in decoration patterns is not connected with that of the shape of the lorica, in such a way that one particular decoration pattern can be detected on more than lorica shape and, conversely, a certain lorica shape will display more than one pattern of decoration in the population examined. The continuous variation met withion the population sample studied made ir impossible to separate the varieties steinii, longispina, longa, ovata, nana, punctata and lotoralensis and formae punctata, pseudolongispina and javanica. Consequently only two varieties: var. armata with two forms; f. armata and f. inevoluta and var. steinii are presently recognized within T. armata. |
