The desirability of coconut oil as dietary fat, particulary as regardscoronary heart disease, is still questioned by some investigators. Some twenty years ago, the use of coconut oil in human nutrition was already advocated . Those opposed to the dietary use o f coconut oil point to its high content of saturated fatty acids which are blamed for increasing serum cholesterol levels and promoting atherogenesis in various animal feeding experiments. In contrast the polyunsaturatedfatty acids, linoleic acid (18.2 6) in particular, are xlassified essential fatty acids(EFA) and credited with cholesterol-loweing and atherosclerosis-preventive effects. Its is important to note that these animal studies that showed hyper-cholesterolemia from coconut oil were not supplied the required small amount of essential fatty acid which coconut oil happens to lack. |
