Abstract: By plotting physical environmental maps in GIS against the geographical location of germplasm collections it is possible to infer environmental characteristics of the very collection sites. Such accrued information may reveal to be usefui in further processes of collecting, characterization, conservation and use for plant genetic resources. Cenargen has been particularly active with this line of research since1996. A pilot study was carried out in 1997 with 11 species of Manihot in this regard. Geographical information from 286 specific collection sites were plotted against the following maps (scale 1:5.000.000) by making use of GIS technology: Major Biomes, Relief Units and Agroecological Zoning (the latter including data on vegetation forms, fertility, texture and drainage of soils). Despite the modest resolution of the maps, the resulting information confirmed in general lines the field records made by the collectors. These maps, in addition to the Northeast Agroecological Zoning map (scale 1:2.000.000), were used in 1998 towards the development of the Brazilian Cassava Core Collection. Ecogeography was a main criterium used to stratify the 4.100 accessions of the Brazilian Germplasm Collection of Cassava. This was possible through the use of those maps in GIS applied to the 5 ecoregional areas of the country holding regional Active Germplasm Banks. The use of environmental maps in GIS, despite the low degree of such maps stands out as an useful ancillary tool in the efforts to characterize and conserve plant genetic resources kept in large germplasm collections.
