Soybeans PI 274453, PI 274454, IAC 73-228, IAC 78-2318, IAC 80-596-2 and IAC 80-4228 have shown varying degrees of resistance to the Pentatomidae Nezara viridula, Piezodorus guildinii and Euschistus heros. Some of them have been used in breeding programs of the institution. Soybean line D 72-9601, selected for resistance to Pseudoplusia includens in the U.S., has shown resistance in Sao Paulo in mixed infestations of leaf-eating caterpillars in which Anticarsia gemmatalis predominated. IAC 78-2318 was only slightly injured by Epinotia aporema, growing point stem borer. Lines PI 274453, PI 274454, and IAC 73-228 suffered only slight leaf injury in areas with heavy populations of Hedilepta indicata that inflicted severe damage on other soybeans. PI 227687 showed resistance to Diabrotica speciosa and to Colaspis near occidentalis when compared with commercial soybeans. No resistance to Cerotoma arcuata and to Diphaulaca viridipennis was recorded for the above-mentioned PI's nor for any other entry of the germplasm tested. PI 171451 and PI 229358 showed nonpreference for oviposition by Bemisia tabaci; colonization was also reduced on these two lines as well as on IAC 78-2318. Lines PI 227687, IAC 73-228, IAC 80-1191, IAC 84-20-1 and PI 274453 showed field resistance to Brazilian bud blight, a soybean virus disease transmitted by species of Frankliniella; these entries showed no resistance when inoculated mechanically. |
