Santa Inês is the most common ovine breed in the Brazilian Northeast. This sheep is rustic, well adapted to semiarid region and their females are characterized by good maternal ability. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of sex and birth type on the growth curves of Santa Inês lambs, and compare nonlinear models for these curves. Lambs with ages ranging from birth to 330 days, born in the years of 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010, fed on pasture with plenty of mineral supplement vailable , were used . To check for the effect of sex and birth type on the weig, ht of the animals, a randomized split plot block design was used. When interaction samong time, sex and birth type were significant (P<0.05) these interactions were unfolded. The method of overlapping confidence intervals was used to compare the estimation of parameters A (maturity weight) and K (maturity rate). In 2005, males and females had similar growth (P>0.05) from 30 to 90 days of age. There were differences (P<0.05) between lambs from single birth and twin births from 30 to 330 days. In 2006, there was an interaction among sex, birth and growth period (P<0.05). Single birth and twin birth lambs, had different birth weight s (P<0.05) . In 2007,it was observed the same behavior of 2005 and 2006 for growth between males and females. In 2008, there was aninteraction among sex, birth type and time (P<0.05) . Males and females had simila (P>0.05) weight at birth and at 30 days of age. In 2010, there was no interaction (P>0.05) among gender, birth type and time. Growth of females was similar (P>0.05) to that of males in weight at birth and at 30 days of age. Single birth lambs had higher (P<0.05) growth at all ages. The Bertalanffy model was shown to be the best one to evaluate growth curve. The greatest difference in growth curves was observed in 2006. It wa s concluded that year of birth did not affect weight gain comparing males and females. From 30 days of age, single birth lambs gained more weight than twin birth lambs. Males usually reach greater mature weight than that of females and have the same growth rate MenosSanta Inês is the most common ovine breed in the Brazilian Northeast.
