A study of breeding success of the Paraguayan Caiman, Caiman yacare, was undertaken between december and april both in 1984 and in 1985, near the Santa Isabel, Rio Alegre and Jofre farms (56o59'W, 17o16'S), in the Brazilian Pantanal, State of Mato Grosso, municipality of Pocone. Nest construction and egg deposition occurred from early january to mid - february. The breeding seasons lasted nearly 100 days (january to april). 81% of nests were found in the semidecidous forest. The nests were principally built near the acuri palm (Shellea phalerata - 18%) and leiteiro (Pouteria sp. - 18%) the length of nests averaged 116 cm +- 0.18 (range 80 to 140 mm) the width averaged 97 cm +- 0,16 (range 60 to 140 cm). The average nest height were 34 cm +- 0.08 (range 20 to 50 cm). There were no significant differences in the dimensions of nests compared between breeding seasons of 1984 and 1985. The average clutch size was 26,3 +- 5,6 (range 18 to 38 eggs). The two breeding seasons were not significantly different with respect to clutch size. Variation in egg weight between nests (CV = 3,16%) smaller than variation within nests (CV = 9,09%) in the 1984 breeding season. There was a positive and significant regression between clutch size (Y) and length of the egg chamber (X) (Y = 1,41 X -13,5, n = 14, r = 0,60, P < 0,05). The incubation period observed was 70 days, females showed defence behavior in 40,7% of total nests. The variation of temperature into the nest chamber was 30oC and normally nearly 2oC above the temperature...
