Soybean was introduced in Brazil in 1882 but only in the 1940s the expansion of commercial crops started. Brazilian soils are originally void of soybean bradyrhizobia therefore inoculants were brought from foreigner countries during the crop expansion period. Selection of adapted strains soon started and still continues such that today 14 million doses of inoculants containing the strains recommended by the researchers were sold in the last crop season. Analyses of soybean bradyrhizobia populations in 18 sites covering the whole Brazilian territory and including uncropped and cropped areas were performed by our group. The populations were trapped by both modern cultivars and unimproved promiscuous genotypes. The results indicated dispersion of strains from areas cropped with soybean to uncropped areas, genetic modifications due to the adaptation to the stressful conditions typical from tropical regions, such as high temperatures and low soil moisture. There are also evidences of lateral transfer of nif genes from inoculant strains to indigenous rhizobia. In most soils, after a five-year period of cropping an enormous diversity was observed among the isolates in relation to morphological, physiological, serological, genetic and symbiotic properties. The rhizobial diversity increases considerably when the period cropped with the host plant increases. The high diversity may play an important role as a biological buffer, avoiding the dominance of a particular strain, but may also limit the introduction of selected strains with higher capacity of N2 fixation. ABSTRACT: Global climate models project into the future, possible changes in climate extremes such as heat waves and cold, heavy rain and more intense and frequent dry periods, with direct implications on agriculture in the Brazilian Cerrado. The objective of this study was to show the monthly and annual average values of accumulated rainfall for periods of ten and thirty years and the occurrence of dry spells with different durations for the rainy season, in Planaltina-DF. For this, rainfall time series were used, based 40-year period (1974-2013) for the main automatic weather station, EmbrapaCerrados, whose geographical coordinates are: 15º35'30? S, 47º42'30" W and altitude of 1007 m. With the results, it concluded that the rainfall showed significant variability therefore when comparing the average cumulative rainfall every ten years with an overall average of 30 years, there was a difference of total precipitated 228,1 mm, for the first (1974-83), 128,8 mm for the second (1984-93) and 206.7 mm and 144.3 mm for the third (1994-03) and fourth (2004-13) decades respectively, compared to the average of 40 years. When it compares the values between the means of decades, are observed even higher differences, where the hasty annual average the first ten years was 1.574 mm and in the last ten years was 1.201,5 mm, a decrease of 372,5 mm, less 23,66%. Also observed is that happened between 14 and 18 periods of up to 10 consecutive days without rain in January and February, which are equivalent, respectively, 35% and 45% of dry spells of probability of occurrence in that period. Already for periods of up to 15 days without rains, for the same months, the frequency was between 03 and 01, which correspond respectively to 8% and 2%.
