Six fungicides and three antagonistic micro-organisms were evaluated against Sclerotium rolfsii, the incitant of collar rot of sunflower. Of these, Thiride proved best in inhibiting sclerotial germination, limiting mycelial growth and improving germination of sunflower seeds in S. rolfsii infested soil. Ceresan wet was next to it in effectiveness. These two chemicals were also more effective than others in inducing germination of seeds sown after 25 days following their incorporation into S. rolfsii infested soil. Benlate, Captan, Bavistin, and Panoctine-35 followed. Thiride and Ceresan wet in order of effectiveness. Mycelia of S. rolfsii arising from sclerotia differed in their tolerance to fungicides than those arising from mycelial discs. Among theantagonists, Trichoderma viride proved highly effective and Bacillus subtilis was next to it against the fungus in culture plates. One Bacillus sp., isolated from contaminated culture plates, also proved antagonistic to the fungus. |
