At present, there is a scarcity of raw material to fulfill the needs of the match industry in Costa Rica. This is due to the fact that the industry uses only a few species that grow in the natural forests of the country. On the other hand, the identification of these species is uncertain. The objectives of the present study were 1) to identify the forest species presently used for manufacturing matches, as well as other species that appear promising, and 2) to determine their physical and mechamical properties in relation to sexteen species were selected and tested, using the following criteria: 1. Species presently used by match factories in Costa Rica. 2. Species recommended by timber extracting workers ("mastateros") of the match industry. 3. Species reco-mmended from other tropical countries which grow in Costa Rica. Botanical samples and wood specimens were obtained from the forest regions where the species were collected. The taxonomical identification of the material colected was made through the botanical text books (floras) of the region, and by sending part of the material to specialists within and outside of the country. The study of the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, was carried out through the use of the machinery made available by the match factory "fosforera Costa Rica Ltda.". Microscopical and macroscopical tests were made in the laboratory, following the instructions of the shellhorn and hashaw method, with minor changes. The resuts of the mechanical tests indicate...
