Field experiments and greenhouse studies were conducted using soil and solutiown cultures to: (1) determine what nutrients are limiting growth and causing soybean chlorosis in calcareous soils of. the Black-land Prairie land resource area; (2) characterize the magnesium deficiency symptoms; (3) characterize the zinc requirements and deficiency symptoms of. soybeans; and (4) verify under field conditions the effects of. foliar applications of. FeSO4 and MnSO4. Soil applications of. S and Mg increased the soybean yield in field experiments during 1977 and 1978 although increases were not consistent. Foilar applications of. Fe-EDDHA corrected the chlorosis and increased the dry weight and the height of. the PI-196, 177, Bragg, Forrest, Lee, and Tracy varieties of. soybeans on soil cultures in the greenhouse. A combination of. foliar applied Fe and Mn chelate corrected chlorosis in the field in 1979 but did not increase yields. The effects of. foliar applications of. Fe and Mn as the sulfates, alone or in combination were inconsistent with respect to both correction of. chlorosis or yield. The critical concentration of. Mg in the third trifoliolate of. 42-day-old Tracy soybeans grown in a modified Hoagland's nutrient solution was found to be 0.2 percent. The amout of. Zn present as an impurity in the compouds utilized in the preparation of. the nutrient solution was suficient to prevent the occurrence of. zinc deficiency in Tracy soybeans. |
