The Marandu Death Syndrome (MDS) is a huge problem in the Brazilian livestock production. The objective was to evaluate the forage accumulation (FA) of grasses, when established in the MSD affected areas. The experiment was carried out in Alta Floresta - MT, Amazon biome, where a Marandu palisadegrass [Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst ex A. RICH.) Stapf. cv. Marandu] pasture had died due MDS. Two years were evaluated, the first year (October/ 2013 to June/ 2014) with maintenance fertilization and the second year (October/ 2014 to June/ 2015) without fertilization. The treatments were ten forage grasses: Brachiaria brizantha cvs. Marandu, Piatã and Xaraés, Brachiaria spp. cv. Mulato II, Brachiaria humidicola cv. Llanero, Brachiaria ruziziensis, Panicum maximum cvs. Mombaça, Tanzânia and Massai, and Cynodon nlemfuensis cv. Star-purple. Following a randomized complete block design in 30 m² plots with three replications. Pre-harvested forage mass was evaluated every 28 days, harvesting the forage into two rectangular frames (1 x 1 m) per plot, at 15 cm from the soil surface for Marandu, Piatã, Xaraés palisadegrass, Llanero, Cynodon, Ruziziensis, Mulato II, and Massai guineagrass, and 35 cm for Mombaça and Tanzânia guineagrass. The FM were weighed and dried in a forcedcirculation oven at 55 ºC until constant weight to determine dry matter accumulation. The data were analyzed using a mixed-models method with special parametric structure in the covariance matrix, through the MIXED procedure of SAS software. Significance was detected at the 0.05 level of probability. Grasses differ for FA per year (P<0.0001) and interaction cultivars x year (P=0.0003). In the first year, FA was higher than in year two for all cultivars. The Mombaça guineagrass had the highest FA among the cultivars evaluated in the first year (32.3 kg MS.ha-1), but with the largest decrease in the second year, producing only 30% compared to the year one (9.5 kg MS.ha-1). Xaraés, Piatã, Tanzânia, Massai, Llanero and Mulato II presented intermediated FA, averaging 18.9 kg MS.ha-1 in the first year and 9.7 kg MS.ha-1 kg in the second year. The Llanero showed lower decline in productivity between the years, with 60% of FA in second year compared to the first. Marandu, Ruziziensis and Cynodon had the lowest FA among cultivars in both years evaluated, with an average of 14.5 kg MS.ha-1 in first year, dropping to 51% in second year (7.4 kg MS.ha-1). Only Marandu, Piatã and Mulato II presented classic symptoms of DBS, with tussocks died. MenosThe Marandu Death Syndrome (MDS) is a huge problem in the Brazilian livestock production.
