Large root obsservation chambers, 88 x 15 x 180 cm deep, were used to study the seasonal pattern of root growth of young citrus trees in central Florida. The chambers were installed below ground at a field site and were periodically raised above ground to record root growth. Under non-limiting soil water conditions, soil temperature and shoot growth were the major factors influencing the pattern of root growth. Root growth commenced in spring during February and continued until November. The rate of total extension growth of the root system was positively correlated with soil temperature. Shoot growth flushes caused a temporary decline in root growth activity, resulting in a cyclic pattern of growth. |
