The design of citrus groves to optimize economic returns depends on several biological concepts. The 4 concepts considered are light interception, the relation-ship between bearing volume per acre and productivity, the need to optimize bearing volume over the life of the grove, and the concept of production efficiency. Various planting systems were considered in relation to these concepts. Grove designs that result in the rapid development of a hedgerow oriented in a north-south direction appeared advantageous in terms of light interception, rapid development of bearing volume, and earlier nd improved productivity. |
