Plants of Stylosanthes hamata (L.) Taub. cv. Verano ans Stylosanthes guyanensis (Aubl.) Sw. cv. Schofield grown separately in pots under greenhouse conditions were subjected to recorring cycle of soil drying/rewatering and the effect on plant growth and herbage quality was assessed, Six harvests at 10 day intervals were taken, commencing on day 45 after planting. Standard growth analysis techiques were in order to make comparisons. Percentages of in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), ash free neutral detergent fibercell wall (%), and crude protein (CP-%)were used to characterize herbage quality. The water stress treatment, in addition to giving the expected reduction in yield in both species, also influenced dry matter distribution in the plants and reduced various growth parameters. There was deleayed flowering of about 8 days in the water-stressed S. hamata plants when compared with the monstressed treatment. S. guyanensis yielded significantly (P<0.05) more dry matter per pot than S. hamata, under both stressed or monstressed conditions... |
