In this work blends of starch and zein, a hidrophobic corn protein, were prepared varying the content of zein from 0% to 80% and using glycerol as plasticizer. Blends were processed in a intensive batch mixer connected to a torque rheometer. The mixtures obtained were moded by compression at 160°C from which the specimens for mechanical test were prepared. The results show that the additon of zein improves the mixing process since it decreases the melting viscosity. Tensile strength presents small variation with addition of zein, while Young's Modulus increases and elongation decrease sharply. |
